Tanzania Investment Centre (TIC) in its efforts to promote investment opportunities to local and foreign investors has managed to link potential investors from China Canton Investment Company with Handeni Rural District. The company is interested in establishing cassava processing plant.  The parties signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on 19th June, 2016 to grow and construct cassava processing plant in Handeni, Tanga. The MoU will last for five years and will focus among others to provide technical expertise to Agriculture Field Officers and farmers on cassava farming, provide washing and chopping machines/tools, purchase and transport cassava from farmers’ farm to the operational center/factory site, and establish two cassava processing industries within six to eight months (6-8) from the date of signing the Memorandum of Understanding.

Speaking during the signing ceremony, the company’s director Mr. John Rwehumbiza informed the stakeholders that the total investment cost of the project will be Usd 10 million upon completion of the construction. The plant will be able to process 400,000 tons of starch from 1.6 million tons of raw cassava. The final products of this project will be exported to China. Therefore there is a need of large quantity of tons of raw material/ cassava to feed the factory. As the result of this opportunity, TIC would like to invite farmers in the country to increase production of cassava for this industry.  Local companies or individuals farmers who will be interested in this project are invited to contact Mr. Gallus Runyeta (County representative) through /+255 785 448211.

The Handeni District Council Director Mr. William Mafukwe emphasized that; farmers will be trained to practice modern farming so as to increase production of the cassava as raw materials for the industry. On the other hand the Handeni District Commissioner Mr. Godwin Gondwe assured his office’s commitment to cooperate with investors to make the project successful. He invited other investors to establish various investment projects in other sectors.

Finally, TIC invited SME’s in Handeni to take advantage of the proposed investment project by increasing cassava farming in order to supply to the new plant.  Special thanks to Hon. Mbelwa Kairuki, Ambassador of Tanzania to China who attracted the investors to come to Tanzania and the management of Handeni District Council for hosting the investors.
